The best climbs in Catalonia
Catalonia and the Pyrenees are a true paradise for long-route climbing, with legendary faces and routes that are part of the history of mountaineering. It's an intense and complete experience, where we can find verticality, beauty, and an alpine atmosphere.
I suggest climbing the routes I call "five stars," the ones that have left their mark on me. Each one is a unique challenge: a play on sensations that leads you to experience the mountains deeply, slowly, and in connection with your surroundings.
Vilanova de Meià
The first time I saw that wall, it was love at first sight. In winter, when the cold chills your bones and the fog settles on the plains of Lleida, it's a great time to go to Roca dels Arcs. Varied and spectacular routes. The Necronomicon route is one of the great classics in the sector, with perfect rock and sustained difficulties.
Tarradets
The Bagasses wall is a historical landmark in Catalan climbing that hardly needs an introduction. Nestled in a key spot in Montsec, it presides over the spectacular gorge cut by the Noguera Pallaresa, the magnificent backdrop that awaits our climbs. The Cade route is, without a doubt, one of the benchmark routes. Opened in the center of the Bagasses wall, it features nineteen pitches of accessible difficulty that never exceed grade five.
Roca Regina
The sun-drenched Regina is one of the great walls of Montsec, right next to the popular and sporty Bagasses wall. The Galí-Molero, the first route on this impressive wall, has become the wall's quintessential classic. The appeal of this line is that it climbs over 400 meters of medium difficulty, with the typical aerial atmosphere of Roca Regina.
Congos de Collegats
With its myriad nooks and whimsical shapes, the area offers a long, vertical, and varied terrain, where climbers and vultures have long coexisted. On the longest wall, a route that has become a classic offers one of the most interesting climbs for a first-timer in Collegats. The Tangier route, with its 350 meters of conglomerate and medium difficulty, is guaranteed to please most climbers.
Serra d'Ensija
The Roca Grande de Ferrús is an imposing conglomerate mound rising in a forgotten corner of Berguedà. Climbing is synonymous with tranquility and contemplation in a beautiful mountain landscape, where the view expands over meadows, forests, hills, chamois, and distant reliefs. The Directa Estel route logically follows a prominent spur and offers the most classic route on the wall.
Central Pyrenees, Aigüestortes
Yours truly has an irresistible fondness for this very special place: the Boí Valley. The Aiguilles de Dellui, located in the Aigüestortes area, near the Estany Llong refuge and in a serene Pyrenean landscape, offer various climbing possibilities on magnificent granite. The Cuánto Cuesta route follows a succession of beautiful cracks with a difficulty level of five, in an exceptional setting.
Needles of Travessany
The jewel in the crown! Your gaze lingers on the fabulous skyline of the ridge: a succession of solid rock spires that constitute one of the best activities in the Boí Valley. The attraction of the Aiguilles de Travessany is intense and persistent; they majestically dominate the Estany Negre region and the Joan Ventosa i Calvell refuge, in an idyllic setting in the heart of the Pyrenees. The Travessany ridge undoubtedly offers an authentic Pyrenean atmosphere.
Montserrat
Montserrat – The apple of my eye! If Montserrat is the birthplace of climbing in Catalonia, Cavall Bernat is undoubtedly its most famous peak. Slender and attractive, steeped in history, it has become the symbol of the massif. The proposed route, the popular Punsola-Reniu, has a particularly aesthetic route and is always on excellent rock. It's a vertiginous slide, and upon reaching the summit, we are rewarded with embracing the Black Madonna.
Pedraforca
Pedraforca – The scene of pioneering and historic climbs, the north face of Pedraforca is one of the unavoidable milestones of Catalan climbing. Here, the routes take on a distinctly mountainous character, with all its ingredients: elevation gain, weather to consider, a relatively long and sometimes delicate descent... in short, a brief summary of the Dolomites offered by this charismatic wall of our country. My suggestion is Estasen, the great classic and essential route on the north face. Along its 600-meter route, you'll enjoy an exceptional high-mountain atmosphere that will captivate your heart.
Why come climb long routes with me?
Big walls have been an essential part of my training as a mountaineer and guide. I've spent hours of effort, learning, and fulfillment, sharing belays with colleagues and allowing myself to be captivated by the beauty of each line.
My experience in these places allows me to offer you the security, knowledge, and calm to fully enjoy long-route climbing. It's not just about reaching the summit, but about experiencing the entire journey: the silence of the wall, the trust in the rope team, and the excitement of overcoming each pitch.
